Handok (Chairman Youngjin Kim)’s Eumseong
manufacturing plant in Chungcheongbuk-do has been chosen as a green company
once again. This marks 5 consecutive years of green company selection for
Handok. Handok was first selected as a green company in 2000 (formerly
eco-friendly business award) which became the first Korean pharmaceutical
company to deserve the title. This award allows Handok to maintain the title
until September 2019, for a total of 19 years.

The title of ‘Green company’ is given to
eco-friendly businesses which have contributed considerably to the environment,
by means such as reducing effluent waste material and conserving energy and
resources. Strict assessment and evaluation criteria apply in selection of
green companies. Manufacturing plants for Handok consist of cutting edge
technologies and equipment for production of medicines and medicinal products,
being equipped with world-class cGMP quality management system. Since the
introduction of HSE policy (Health, Safety, Environment) in the 1990’s, Handok
had established its own comprehensive system for maintenance of health, safety
and environment. Also, Handok pursued a variety of activities in environmental
improvement such as energy and resources conservation and reduction of waste
material.

Handok manufacturing plant, especially,
came to deserve the title of green company again this year as recognition of
their continuous effort in environmental improvement activities. Handok
manufacturing plant has invested in more than 2 billion won in replacement with
LED light bulbs, installation of energy saving system and improvement in waste
water treatment facilities over the last three years. As a result, Handok was
able to considerably reduce the amount of greenhouse gas, waste water and other
waste material produced from the manufacturing plant. In addition, the plaster
part of the manufacturing plant was re-built recently, which includes 1.2
billion won RTO (Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer) that allows for a complete
combustion of volatile organic compounds, minimizing the potential for air
pollution.

Youngjin Kim, chairman of Handok, mentioned
that “Handok, as well as developing excellent products which contributes to the
health of the mankind, is also endeavoring to maintain a healthy environment
for all of us. We will continue to stay interested in the matter of
environmental conservation and practice eco-friendly business management in the
future”.
