Handok (Chairman & CEO Young-jin Kim, Vice President Jin-ki Paik) will host “Living National Treasure Online Classes” where participants can learn about traditional Korean culture from living national treasures.

Handok has consistently offered this social contribution activity since 2012 to promote the values and importance of traditional Korean culture. This year, given the social distancing measures currently in place, it has moved the venue online so that people can still learn about and experience traditional culture.

This event will be led by master artisan of Maedeupjang (Decorative Knotting) Hae-soon Kim (Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 22) and master of Joseon Wangjo Gungjung Eumsik

(Royal Culinary Art of the Joseon Dynasty) Gil-ja Jeong (Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 38). Participants will learn how to make their own traditional maedeup interior decoration, a modern re-interpretation of traditional knots, and recipes to make yaksik (a Korean dessert made from sweet rice) and omija punch while also listening to interesting stories of traditional culture embedded in each activity.

The traditional maedeup class is available for only a limited number of participants who will be provided a special kit that includes a design and maedeup personally created by master artisan Kim. The traditional cooking class is open to an unlimited number of participants as ingredients can be easily found near homes and offers high accessibility to all interested participants. Two of Master Jeong’s special recipes will also be shared during the class.

The Living National Treasure Online Classes will be open for one month from July 27, 2020 at a special discounted price on “Frip”, a leisure and activity platform. All profits from the traditional cooking class will be donated to the socially disadvantaged.
